IT Store Experts and Data Recovery

Usually when something goes wrong with the computer, out first thought is to bring it back to the store for repair, especially if it is still under warranty. For the same reason, many people will bring their computer to computer stores and expect to get their data back in the even that their hard disk crashed.

As data recovery is a labor intensive and delicate process, there are specific experts who offer this service. All other computer experts are not up to the task and nor do they have the facilities to perform a full-scale data recovery. It is just like the medical scenario, where you cannot expect a dentist to perform a brain surgery.

Your computer store could agree to recover the data for you for several hundred dollars, a low fee compared to those charged by data recovery companies. But just stop and consider how they would do it. Since they do not have a clean room, that is a room with controlled amount of dust particles that can damage the hard disk, and possess no machines, they will probably recover your data using...a software.

These people do have the technical advantage over the average consumer such as yourself, but they might not have your best interest in mind. So they get paid if you get your data back and not if you don't. It become a number game, where the more clients they get, the higher their chance of getting paid.

The worst case is they don't earn your money, but at the same time, you may never get another shot to recover the lost data ever again. A dentist may have a better chance at performing a brain surgery than you do, but they do not die or become invalid if the surgery flop.

There have also been instances where big computer stores actually disguised as data recovery firms. The story behind this is they could be hiring people to perform data recovery using softwares but not amounting to professionals since they do not have the facilities nor specialty. Worst of all, these unscrupulous companies may blatantly charge like a professional firm, or slightly cheaper.

So is going to the IT store for data recovery worth all the trouble? The answer is yes. Despite all that, going to a local computer store expert can be a viable option. Just make sure to pay only what they are worth, and not what what you would pay a data recovery firm. Play safe and get a bit-image backup, and then have them return the original, before approving the recovery process.
